Tonight we drilled double leg takedowns!  I have a leg up with these from my wrestling days.

During rolls I tapped a blue (with an armlock) that I have never tapped before.  I roll with him often and today I finally got a tap!

We continued the butterfly sweep from last Friday.  I am still having trouble nailing the end of it.

I was invited to stay for the advanced class... all we did was roll for the entire 2nd hour!  Babalu's gang was there and this time I have more hours under my belt.  I went up against a purp and a blue and neither could submit me.  Some of my gym mates were able to sub me though... but they each said I was getting harder to sub!  Progress baby.

BJJ - Grapplethon

I went to a Grapplethon for charity.  The format was open mat training.   I rolled with a bunch of other white belts from other gyms around orange county.  I also went with one purple belt who destroyed me.  It was tons of fun.  My right wrist is injured though... I am not sure how but it isn't working very well at the moment.

Learned how to sweep from the butterfly guard.  In butterfly guard, sit up and control an arm by snatching the opponents triceps and the other arm shoots an underhook on the opponents body.  Next drop the leg opposite the underhook behind you while lifting your remaining hook and dropping to your shoulder.  You will end up in either half guard (if you try for mount) or side control if you scissor you leg through.

I was not very good at it.

The professor is still sick. Today a purple lead class. We went over haymaker blocks (answer the phone), breakfalls, technical stand ups, double wristlock sweep, flower sweep, pendulum sweep, and armbar escapes (nutcracker). I have a feeling I am going to forget lots of it, but the sweeps from guard are amazing. The flower sweep makes my partner feel like he weighs 10 lbs.

 During rolling I got a cut over my right eye that bleed a bit. No fun! I'm still going back tomorrow.

We went over side control escapes and general side control theory.  We drilled it first at %50 resistance, then at %100 resistance.

Tonight we drilled scissor sweep and guard passing.  The professor also went over guard passing theory and basics to make sure us white belts understand.

Magno is sick today with the flu, so a brown belt taught class.  This is my first ever class with anyone besides Magno... it was fun!

During rolls I keep getting caught in armbars.  I forget about my arm positioning during scrambles and often get nailed.  It is frustrating.  It is the mistake I make the most right now.  However, I am able to pull off trap and rolls when i get mounted.  And when I get mounted I don't panic anymore at all.  So there is some progress happening.

I drilled omoplata, sit over the roll into reverse kimura.  I also drilled a bunch of armbars from guard.

Rolling was quite fun and I didn't gas at all despite an intense warm up.  Tomorrow I am going to try a 2-a-day just to see what I am made of... and just to see if it is possible.  I've found I enjoy pushing my body now that it's capacity for work has increased.

We continued Kimura/hip bump combos.

I was invited to the advanced class!  We drilled hip bump into reverse kimura.  The bottom person (after the hip bump) has to hug the top person.  Top moves one leg up by bottom's head and leans to that side while pushing down on bottoms opposite bicep. Once the grip breaks, top switches grips on the captured arm's elbow while taking the newly freed hand and posting it out.  To finish the kimura top swivels his hips out towards the mat.  This is a TIGHT keylock and results in a quick tap.

During rolling I was able to hit an Omoplata.  I figure four'd my legs like I see Clark Gracie do but my professor told me not to.  After class I asked him why not and he told me it makes it harder to get up.  If I lock the figure four AFTER I sit up I can lock it, but locking it while laying back makes it too hard to sit up to finish the submission.  I also almost got an armbar from gurad vs a slightly larger opponet (4 stripe white belt).  I just had to extend my legs more... My guard is poor but it is slowly getting better.

We drilled kimura from the guard.  After the professor turned it into a kimura/hip bump sweep if the person defends the kimura.  Good stuff.

My guard is terrible and is easily passed.  My goal this week is to work bottom as much as possible.  I am aiming for Omoplatas and today's kimura/sweep.  Of course in the heat of battle I'll take what I can get.
